Continuing with putting music to poetry, this particular poem came from a very hard time in my life we had just buried our son some months ago when my wife fell pregnant then subsequently went on to have a miscarriage. In my mind i did not blame God for the death of my son but the miscarriage broke our hearts and what spirit we had left a day or two later I wrote this poem.
I have read this poem at several open mics, the most memorable was the Bay Horse in Moulsham Street in Chelmsford at the time the pub was run down and well known for drug dealing and for being rowdy. Well that night I stood up for my reading the pub was not busy but it was rowdy and most poets were being drowned out by folks at the bar and it was going the same way for me as I started to recite Gods Office but at the end the pub and fallen silent, you could hear a pin drop and I heard the biggest cheer of my life and I received an standing ovation through out the pub from those standing around the bar to those attending the open mic, as a poet it was incredible moving. Then some months later at the Poets cafe in London I recited the same poem to a packed audience a mix of poets and journalist and it fell kind of flat just a polite applause . Then that night on the train home I read about women I think she was a missionary working some where like Sudan and she had called a teddy bear Mohammed and was facing a prison sentence or worst….after my reading of Gods Office in so many public places I didn’t know if i should laugh or cry. As the point to the poem is you always hurt the one you love, and some people may not see it that way as more of an insult and attack against God that could be no further from the truth.
